Fruit forest

The world we live in breathes a rich, enchanting aroma of fruit.
Sweet temptations are everywhere, constantly provoking the senses of taste.
The air feels blissfully tipsy, and the sunlight falls just right.
This is the world described by Miss Cherry.
She also says that each night before sleep, she spends about an hour wondering why life is so wonderful,
and often, she slips into dreams, smiling.

Mrs. Bitter Melon, however, tells a different story.
To her, the world has been the same since childhood:
a place full of rotting roots and sour stench of decay,
of bleak winds that cut through bone,
of faces warped by selfishness and greed.
Every step must be taken with care,
for the ground is riddled with traps,
and those who fall are met not with mercy, but laughter.
And as she spoke, Mrs. Bitter Melon burst into tears.

I wish I could offer her comfort, perhaps by saying,
“The world isn’t really that bad?”
But such words only matter to those willing to believe them.

How could Miss Cherry and Mrs. Bitter Melon,
who live right beside each other,
see the world in such utterly different ways,
while the same trees shade their summers
and the same wind moves through their gardens.

Then I began to ask myself -
What does it really matter what the world truly is?

Little by little, I started caring less about what the world is really like.
After all, the world each of us sees is merely a reflection of our own lives,
with its colors and light constantly shifting with the moods we carry within us.
I’ve come to accept that I may never truly understand the world.
And perhaps I do not need to.

I no longer ask whether the world is beautiful or not.
What matters to me now is something much simpler:
When I look around at the world I am in,
if I find something boring, is there someone else who feels the same?
If I find something wonderful, is there someone else who feels the same?
As long as such a person exists,
then this world is good enough.

She could be gentle Miss Papaya.
He could be the funny-looking Mr. Kiwi.
It could also be a Durian, thorned and pungent on the outside, yet rich and golden within.
Or grapes, which are delicate and require a little extra care to handle.
Whatever shape or form they take, it does not matter.
As long as someone like that exists.

As long as someone like that exists,
I can continue wandering through this bewildering fruit forest,
and keep walking forward, all the way to the end.
